Discrete Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today’s leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, and human resources). Many systems include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, solutions that were formerly considered peripheral such as product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), and reporting. During the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers'' IT technology with their business strategies, and subsequent software selection.

Pull vs Push: a Discussion of Lean, JIT, Flow, and Traditional MRP Part 1: Tutorial

Flow manufacturing leverages techniques to help manufacturers create any product on any given day, in any given quantity including the "quantity of one" (i.e., through the so-called mixed-model production), while keeping inventories to a minimum and shortening cycle times in order to quickly fill customer orders.

While several years ago prospects were tentatively inquiring about lean capabilities, now they seem to be increasingly requesting them. Companies such as John Costanza Institute of Technology ( JCIT ) have been the pioneering source of the philosophies and techniques behind flow manufacturing, which replaces shop-floor silos, such as machines grouped by their function, and traditional scheduling and forecasting with process or product Read More

How to Achieve Lean Manufacturing

Lean manufacturing is a transformational exercise that requires an organization to cast aside long-held beliefs and business processes. The five main steps to achieving lean transition are defining value, mapping the value stream, making the activities flow, responding to customer demand, and continuous improvement.

This would increase transparency and avoid stock bullwhip effects across the entire supply chain. A good example would be a repetitive scheduling technique like customer delivery schedule (CDS), which supports repetitive demands for one or several items to one or several locations in one transaction for discrete times or time buckets. Such schedule level management tools can enable users to receive demands Read More

Lean Manufacturing: Reaping the Rewards of Lean through Response Management

For years, manufacturers have been driven by sales forecasts and the need to maximize production efficiency at every level of operation. But in order to be successful, manufacturers must look toward adopting a lean mentality. While lean techniques are more easily applied to some manufacturing styles than others, new software tools are now able to deliver the benefits of lean to both high-mix and low-volume operations.

Meet PCI DSS Compliance Requirements for Test Data with Data Masking

Whether you’re working toward your first or your next payment card industry (PCI) data security standard (DSS) audit, you know compliance is measured on a sliding scale. But full compliance can’t be achieved with just one policy or technology.
